Bike New Haven Welcomes SCG/AVANGRID as Founding Sponsor
NEW HAVEN and ORANGE, Connecticut — January 16, 2019 — AVANGRID, Inc., the parent company of United Illuminating and Southern Connecticut Gas, is now an official sponsor of Bike New Haven, the companies announced today.
Bike New Haven and AVANGRID (NYSE: AGR) will collaborate to provide a healthy and environmentally friendly transportation option throughout New Haven, enabling riders to travel more efficiently to downtown areas and other forms of transit.
Bike New Haven launched in February of 2018 with an initial 100 bicycles and 10 stations. The program, operated by P3 Global Management (P3GM), will continue its growth until it reaches 300 bicycles and 30+ stations. Many of the bicycles display AVANGRID branding.
“AVANGRID and its companies, including United Illuminating and Southern Connecticut Gas, are proud to be founding sponsors of Bike New Haven, supporting this community transportation option that is both affordable and environmentally conscious,” said Tony Marone, President and CEO of AVANGRID’s Connecticut companies. “Bike New Haven is a great example of how we can reduce carbon emissions by using an existing technology — the bicycle — in new and innovative ways.”
AVANGRID, based in Orange, Connecticut, is a leader in service, innovation and investment in the U.S. energy industry.
“On behalf of city residents and the region’s bicycling enthusiasts, I applaud AVANGRID’s just-announced sponsorship of Bike New Haven: the ‘tailwind’ provided by a fixture in the region’s corporate community is most welcome,” New Haven Mayor Toni N. Harp said. “I appreciate the symbolism built into a major energy provider underwriting efforts to reduce energy consumption – I’m confident the region will continue reducing its carbon footprint with contributions from all sectors, and this sponsorship is additional evidence of that collaboration.”
Bike-sharing is meant for quick trips around the city. Customers can pick up a bicycle at one of the stations throughout the city, return it at another station, and continue with their day. New Haven residents can register for membership options including single trips at $1.75, a daily pass at $8, a monthly pass at $20 and an annual pass for $90. There are also discounts in place for low-income and senior users.
The bike share system features smart bikes, which will allow riders to temporarily pause their rides. This will be useful for quick mid-trip stops. The system also allows for riders to dock their bike at already full stations, simply by locking the bike to itself.
